B*ATL, is proud to bring The Eighth Regiment
Band to the historic Battleground neighborhoods of the Battle of
Atlanta for the first time. The band will be performing along
the frontlines of the 1864 Battle in today's East Atlanta
Village in a 90 minute concert that will be free to the public.
The concert will be part of a day of fun activities for the
entire family on Saturday July 24th. The ensemble brings to life
in a very lively way a piece of American history by representing
the hundreds of military bands that were formed in the Union and
Confederate Armies during the Civil War. The 8th Regiment
appearance is sponsored by the East Atlanta Beer Fest.
The 14-member band performs music from both
sides of the conflict in replica blue and gray uniforms, with
appropriate dialogue and action. They create a program intended
to be "a museum of 19th-century American emotions." "We dress,
feel and act so that you'll think you're in a time capsule. So
you can feel what the men and women of the Civil War period
felt" said Carruth, a Civil War re-enactor who travels with an
artillery unit.
With tales based on historical fact to stories pure fantasy The B*ATL Storytelling Festival returns on July 18th chock full of links to the historic Battle
of Atlanta.

founder and baker of Sister Schubert's Rolls and author of a new
cookbook of time tested family recipes, Cast Your Bread Upon
the Waters. She will appear at the annual commemoration of
the Battle of Atlanta in July on Saturday July 24th from 1-4pm
to autograph her book at Bound to Be Read Books in the East
Atlanta Village.
Patricia Barnes was nicknamed Sister at birth by her older
sister who couldn't pronounce Sister. Her last name at the time
was Schubert. She started Sister Schubert's Homemade Rolls
almost by accident as a homebased business using her
grandmother's heirloom roll recipe. In 1989 she volunteered to
donate some of the family rolls to a holiday frozen food fair at
her church. She received orders for eighty pans. The next year
the orders totaled 200 and the next they went to 300. She
decided that there might be a wider market for what her
grandmother called "Everlasting Rolls" and the orders have never
stopped coming.
Now, Sister Schubert, has compiled a book full of time tested
family recipes that go back a ways interspersed with personal
anecdotes. The book is a glossy baker's rack type book that
speaks to a higher purpose. Net proceeds from sale of the book
will go to Sasha's Home, an orphanage in Gorlovka, Ukraine.
Sasha's Home is an alternative to crowded state institutions. It
provides a warm temporary home for children named Alexander or
Alexandra in honor of the author's adopted son.
B*ATL
is proud to host
Russell S. Bonds,
author of the recent critically acclaimed book entitled War
Like the Thunderbolt.
In War Like the Thunderbolt: The Battle and Burning of
Atlanta, award-winning author Russell S. Bonds takes the
reader behind the lines and across the smoky battlefields of
Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, Ezra Church, and Jonesboro, and into
the lives of fascinating characters, both the famous and the
forgotten, including the fiery and brilliant Sherman; General
John Bell Hood, the Confederacy’s last hope to defend Atlanta;
Benjamin Harrison, the diminutive young Indiana colonel who
would rise to become President of the United States; Patrick
Cleburne, the Irishman turned- Southern officer; and ten-year-old
diarist Carrie Berry, who bravely withstood and bore witness to
the fall of the city. Here also is the dramatic story of the
ordeal of Atlanta itself—the five-week artillery bombardment,
the expulsion of its civilian population, and the infamous fire
that followed. Based on new research in diaries, newspapers,
previously unpublished letters, and other archival sources,
War Like the Thunderbolt is a combination of captivating
narrative and insightful military analysis—a stirring account of
the battle and burning of the “Gate City of the South.”
RUSSELL S.

money to erect and maintain National Park-like display signs
across the battlefield area to augment existing historic
markers. The new signs would have graphics and maps to involve
readers more and provide a 365-day-a-year B*ATL
experience for visitors as well as area residents.
