The 5th Annual "Battle of Atlanta
Double Quick" 5K fun run/walk will be on July 19th starting
at 8:30am. The starting and finish lines are near where
the actual Battle of Atlanta began in the Historic Kirkwood neighborhood.
The race will begin as the battle began with Union troops firing
the first shot. Union troop re-enactors will be on hand to start
the race at Bessie Branham Park just north of Hosea Williams
Drive.
The racecourse goes on neighborhood streets, through
downtown Kirkwood, and along the PATH bikeway through shaded Gillam Park.
While there are now buildings along the course, the topography
has remained virtually the same since the battle.

The Battle of Atlanta took place on July 22nd,
1864. The 5K Double Quick this year on July 19th is part of the
B*ATL Commemoration of the 144th anniversary of the Civil War
battle.
The race will be neighborhood friendly and suitable
for various ages and skill levels. Volunteers from Kirkwood are
organizing the race. Entry forms are available online. Registration
before the 18th is $17 ($22 after the 18th and on the day of the race). Runners
will begin gathering at Bessie Branham Park at 7:30 -8:00am

The Double Quick 5K will be the first of a full
line up of activities scheduled for Saturday July 19th. Re-enactment
soldiers will be stationed in re-created trenches near the racecourse in the Kirkwood.
Story telling, a Living History Exhibit and
Guided Van and Walking Tours will also be offered in East Atlanta
along the original front lines.
